Movie Overview | A Beautiful Mind (2001)

A Beautiful Mind, American biographical film, released in 2001, that told the story of American Nobel Prize winner John Nash, whose innovative work on game theory in mathematics was in many ways overshadowed by decades of mental illness. Parts of the film, which is set largely on the campus of Princeton University against a backdrop of Cold War intrigue, are seen from Nash’s delusional perspective. The movie, directed by Ron Howard and based loosely on Sylvia Nasar’s 1998 biography of Nash, won four Academy Awards, including that for best picture.

Based on the true story of a genius mathematician, John Forbes Nash Jr., it is the story of a professor with a mind that did amazing things but that also turned against him with the delusions of schizophrenia.  Nash, played amazingly by Russell Crowe and his wife Alicia, played by Jennifer Connelly, are given the diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia while Alicia is pregnant with their first child.  This is when the first signs appear and we see, in Crowe's performance, a deterioration and downhill path, which is believable and keeps us engaged and hoping that he does not descend completely into madness.  Surprisingly, he is able to regain his ability to function with the new medications that became available.  Directed by Ron Howard, this story is not only a moving, true love story but also a real look into mental illness and how it affects many lives.  If I remember correctly Ron Howard, Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly won Oscars, as well as winning an Oscar for Best Picture.  A story that is perfectly acted and that gives one a lot  to think about.  Intense but worthwhile and should not be missed.

This movie is Russel Crow's best.  It is based on a true story.  It is a love story more than anything else.  Jennnifer Connelly does an amazing jo as the love interest in this film.
Things happen in this movie that you don't expect, which I really like in movies.  I won't give it away, but it really throws you for a loop.  The movie builds up to a phenomenal and beautiful ending that I won't give a away either.  You will just have to see it.  But I highly recommend this movie.  Excellent acting from everyone in this movie.
