E.T. The Extra Terrestrial is a sweet science fiction film, that I saw with my children when they were both under 10 years of age and I left the theatre crying.  I recently watched it with my 9 year old granddaughters and, yes, again I found myself crying at the end.  The movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, is about an sweet alien who comes to earth and is discovered and befriended by a young boy, named Elliot, played by Henry Thomas.  Elliot discovers the alien after he was left behind when his spaceship departed without him. After Elliott brings E.T. home, we see that E.T. can't survive in Earth's environment and must return to his home planet. While hiding E.T., Elliott develops a close friendship with the alien and a connection that binds them to each other. With the help of Elliott, his siblings, Gertie is played by Drew Barrymore,, and their friends, E.T. sends a rescue message to his planet.   The obstacle in the way of the gentle alien returning home are government scientists who want to capture and study E.T. instead of allowing him to leave for his home planet.  A classic magical film that is captivating.
