I wanted to review the original Fletch after giving such a bad review for it's sequel.  Fletch is a great 80s comedy.  First off, the soundtrack just nakes you think 80s.  It has a unique sound.
The story is outrageous, but it is very funny.  Chevy Chase is at his prime here.  This is probably his best movie.  Even if you are not a fan of his you should see this movie, it might change your mind.
Some really funny scenes, like when he gets a prostate exam as part of his investigative work, and starts to sing Moon River.  That's a classic scene still quoted today.
Check it out if you have never seen it, you won't be disappointed.

Fletch is a quintessential comedy that solidified Chevy Chase’s status as a leading funnyman of the 1980s. Directed by Michael Ritchie and based on Gregory Mcdonald’s novel, the film follows the misadventures of Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher, a witty investigative journalist who gets tangled in a web of deception while probing into a suspicious drug case.

Chase delivers a masterful performance as Fletch, effortlessly embodying the character’s charm, quick wit, and penchant for disguise. His knack for improvisation shines through, making each scene feel spontaneous and engaging. From his memorable one-liners to his clever interactions with a colorful cast of characters, Chase’s comedic timing is impeccable, keeping audiences laughing from start to finish.

The plot, while built around a murder mystery, serves primarily as a vehicle for Fletch’s antics. As he adopts various disguises and personas, the film cleverly satirizes the world of journalism and the absurdity of life. The humor is sharp and often self-deprecating, allowing Fletch to navigate dangerous situations with a laid-back confidence that’s both entertaining and endearing.

Supporting performances, particularly from Tim Matheson as the charming but shady Dr. Joseph Dolan and Geena Davis as Fletch’s love interest, add depth to the narrative. The chemistry between Chase and Davis is palpable, providing both romantic tension and comedic relief.

Visually, the film is straightforward but effectively captures the 1980s vibe. The pacing is brisk, and the clever script is filled with memorable moments that have stood the test of time.

Ultimately, Fletch is more than just a comedy; it’s a clever commentary on identity, media, and the pursuit of truth, all wrapped in a highly entertaining package. It’s a film that not only showcases Chevy Chase at his finest but also remains a beloved classic in the comedy genre. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, Fletch promises a delightful escape filled with laughs and memorable moments.

"Fletch" (1985) is a comedic gem that stands the test of time, showcasing the brilliant comedic talents of Chevy Chase in one of his most iconic roles. Directed by Michael Ritchie, this film masterfully blends elements of mystery and comedy, providing a delightful experience that keeps audiences laughing from start to finish.

Chase stars as Irwin M. Fletcher, an undercover reporter who becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue while investigating a drug ring. With his quick wit and penchant for disguises, Fletch navigates a series of hilarious situations, often leaving a trail of bemused characters in his wake. Chase’s impeccable timing and charm make Fletch an unforgettable and endearing protagonist.

The film's script, based on Gregory Mcdonald's novel, is sharp and filled with clever one-liners and memorable quotes. Fletch's relentless pursuit of the truth, combined with his knack for getting into absurd predicaments, creates a perfect blend of humor and mystery. The film expertly balances slapstick comedy with clever dialogue, ensuring that there’s something for everyone.

Supporting performances from an ensemble cast, including Geena Davis as Fletch's love interest and Tim Matheson as the shady doctor, add depth and richness to the story. Each character brings their own quirks, enhancing the film's overall comedic tone.

Visually, "Fletch" captures the vibrant essence of the 1980s, with a catchy soundtrack that complements the film's lighthearted feel. The cinematography, while not groundbreaking, effectively showcases the various locales in Los Angeles, where much of the action unfolds.

While the plot can sometimes feel secondary to the humor, the film's charm lies in its ability to entertain rather than overwhelm with complexity. The audience is invited to enjoy the ride rather than get bogged down in intricate details.

Overall, "Fletch" remains a beloved classic that perfectly encapsulates the comedic style of its era. With Chevy Chase at the helm, the film delivers a delightful mix of humor, intrigue, and unforgettable moments. It’s a must-watch for fans of 80s comedies and anyone looking for a good laugh.
