John Wick: Chapter 4 is one of the most unique action movies in quite a while. It blends the coolest aspects you can possibly think of and turns it into a well shot and directed film.
The common trend with cinema now is that filmmakers and studios are not flinching at long runtimes. They are trusting the audience to go along with their long ass movies and it is really paying off. Especially for this flick.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is exactly how long it needs to be. This is a sprawling epic with many moving parts that needs time to swell and erupt. Never does it feel boring or as if it drags. All the momentum is forward as the movie mixes in interesting set pieces, characters, and action sequences.
Admittedly, it is pretty funny considering the foundation of this was a 100 minute long action, one off. Nevertheless, it’s all earned with its incredible detail and style.
Do not be worried or intimidated by the 169 minute runtime. You will be treated to a stylized adventure that becomes the most interesting movie in the franchise.
This movie is surprisingly deep and rich. A LOT is happening other than our boy John trying to earn freedom. Many characters get introduced with different motivations that keeps the movie fresh. JW4 does a spectacular job at molding these stylized action characters into faces that we cheer for and understand. Like a really spectacularly, amazing job at it. It is scary good.
Without giving away these characters and their traits, the film is actually quite moving and beautiful with these additions. Tragedy disguised as “business” is a key element particularly and it coaxes the audience to care even more.
Yeah, man. I said “moving”. A John Wick movie sparked emotional thoughts in my head and it was beautiful honestly. John Wick himself is worn down and tired. Nothing left to fight for except to fight for peace. That motivation resonates throughout the entire film and it’s deeply understood. This is John Wick at its absolute peak in character writing.
So, yes. This movie is BIG, but not in the sense of budget or scope. Yes that, but it stands out as a tragic, revenge tale that takes bites out of you when you least expect it.
Bravo, writers Michael Finch and Shay Hatten!
I firmly believe John Wick: Chapter 4 has set a new standard with modern action. After a decade of Keanu going all in on gun-fu and stunts, the franchise peaks and completely elevates itself with interesting, moving character writing.
