Retribution (2023) is a high-stakes, action-packed thriller starring Liam Neeson, who once again takes on the role of a tough yet emotionally burdened protagonist. The film follows Matt Turner, a successful financier, who finds himself trapped in a life-or-death situation when a mysterious voice on the phone informs him that his car is rigged with explosives. As he races against time to figure out who is behind the threat, Turner must navigate a series of moral dilemmas while protecting his family.
The film excels in creating tension and urgency, with a claustrophobic atmosphere that keeps viewers on edge. Neeson delivers his signature performance as the hardened, reluctant hero, bringing gravitas to a role that doesn’t stray far from his previous action-thriller characters. The pacing is swift, and the action sequences are well-executed, particularly the moments that take place within the confines of the car, where much of the film’s suspense is generated.
However, Retribution suffers from a somewhat predictable plot. The "man-in-a-trap" premise has been done before, and while the film delivers a solid experience, it doesn't break new ground in the thriller genre. The twists, while effective, are not entirely surprising, and the villain’s motivations feel underdeveloped. Additionally, the emotional stakes, particularly Turner’s relationship with his children, could have been explored more deeply to add more resonance to the story.
Overall, Retribution is a well-crafted, if formulaic, thriller that offers plenty of tension and action but lacks the originality needed to elevate it above similar films. Fans of Liam Neeson’s previous work will enjoy the ride, but it’s unlikely to leave a lasting impression.
