Normally, I do not like fantasy films, as they are usually silly and unbelievable. This changed when I saw Splash. Not that this story is believable, but it is almost...almost there. In this story, Allen Bauer is rescued from drowning as a young boy off Cape Cod by a young mermaid. What? Yes, and years later, he returns to the same location, and once again, Bauer, excellently played by Tom Hanks, manages to fall into the sea, and is rescued once more by the same mermaid, later named Madison after the avenue and played by Darryl Hannah. (Allen isn't sure what he has seen and what he has imagined). Using maps from a sunken ship, the mermaid decides to search for Allen in New York City, sprouting legs when her tail dries. On finding Allen, they fall in love, but she cannot stay on land, as when wet,, her legs turn back into a mermaid fin. John Candy is hilarious in the role of Hanks brother, who is the exact opposite and Eugene Levy is an obsessed marine biologist who knows Madison's secret and is on a constant mission to get her legs wet and see her turn into a mermaid. Sounds crazy? Yes, but this crazy story becomes a wonderful, romantic comedy with perfect acting and one soon gets into the fantasy and hopes that Allen and Madison enjoy their life together under the sea. The only sad part, if you think deeply into this, is that in order to find happiness Allen has to leave his brother and life as he knows it, never to return. However, it is a light, funny enjoyable love story and leaves the viewer feeling happy!
