Thelma is a comedy about a 93 year old grandmother, Thelma, played by June Squibb, who is scammed out of her money and decides to do something about it. Thelma has a special relationship with her grandson Daniel, played by Fred Hechinger, and we meet him when he is helping "Grandma' with her computer skills, showing her how to navigate her computer. Because of their special fondness for each other, when she gets a call from someone claiming to be Daniel, who supposedly was in a bad car accident and needs $10,000 for attorney fees, she sends the money as requested. After realizing that she has fallen victim to a scam, which is now common among seniors, Thelma is not going to let this go and decides to track down the scammer and get her money back. In spite of what her daughter, son-in-law and grandson believe, Thelma goes out to retrieve her money, has many adventures, most of which are silly and unbelievable. This film is one that the older folks will appreciate as Thelma, played by the 94 year old Squibb, does not play the old, helpless, needy grandma role but goes out, has adventures and is a hero in this adventure spoof. There is that sad truth, however, that she is not what she used to be and that, for the older viewers, is a difficult truth to accept. A funny, silly film that is made special by the cast, especially Thelma herself.
