Young Frankenstein, a Mel Brooks film,  is a hilarious spoof on horror movies with a perfect cast  Respected researcher and physician, Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, played by Gene Wilder, is the grandson of the more famous Dr. Victor Frankenstein, who did experiments on bringing back the dead.  He tries to disassociate himself from his grandfather, ,and even pronounces their name differently.  Frederick returns to the small  town and castle in Transylvania, where Victor conducted his experiments.  He leaves his fiancee, Elizabeth, played by Madeline Kahn,  in the US.  . He also slowly begins to get drawn into the research that his grandfather conducted. As Frederick tries to reanimate his dead subject with the help of his hunchbacked aide Igor, played by Marty Feldman,  and his beautiful assistant Inga, played by Teri Garr,. there are  rumors  in the town of what he is doing. . Inspector Kemp, played by Kenneth Mars, is assigned to stop any work if it is actually happening. Frederick and his group try to hide their work from the inspector, there are many roadblocks and Elizabeth comes to Transylvania and accidently gets caught up with the experiment.
A group of us older adults watched this movie in our building community room for Halloween.  We had some wine, cheese and crackers and, although we had all seen the movie before, the sound of hysterical laughter filled the room and filtered out into the hallway.  Yes, it is rated PG13, but parents should know that there is foul language, violence and sexual innuendos throughout the movie.  It is, after all, a Mel Brooks film.  Young children wouldn't understand the undertones and take it at face value.  Those 10 and older may get some of the sexual messages if they are paying attention, but I am not sure that this movie  would actually grab their interest.  It is in black and white, for one thing, without all the tech effects, so without the bells and whistles our youth of today may not get into this movie.  In any case, this is a classic, spoof and makes an enjoyable evening activity to share with family and friends
