Movie Overview | Oppenheimer

Tagline: The world forever changes.

The story of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s role in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.

A larger-than-life person deserves a larger-than-life film, and writer-director Christopher Nolan has made that in his latest picture, his greatest. The three-hour film about Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the director of the Manhattan Project and Father of the Atomic Bomb, offers a detailed biography of the brilliant but naïve physicist who embarked on a risky venture, leaving him morally conflicted about his creation. The story spans several decades of the scientist’s life and chronicles his construction of “the gadget” and his ramifications from his left-wing politics and efforts to contain the nuclear genie. The film is overlong and could have used some editing in the first and last hours, but it’s necessary to tell Oppenheimer’s story. The film’s cinematography, soundtrack, and sound quality all top-notch, giving moviegoers a visceral experience. Murphy, Matt Damon, Tom Conti, Benny Safdie, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman, Rami Malek, and Robert Downey Jr., who gives an award-winning supporting performance, bring the story to life. The finest film of the summer, if not 2023, is “Oppenheimer”. Its powerful message and message we can never hear too often remind us of the significance of not carrying the same Promethean weight as Oppenheimer.
