Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night (2022) continues to expand on the Progressive series' reinterpretation of the original Sword Art Online story, diving deeper into the early floors of Aincrad. Directed by Ayako Kōno, the film offers a blend of action, character development, and nostalgia, catering to long-time fans of the franchise while remaining accessible to newcomers.
Picking up from the events of Aria of a Starless Night, this sequel follows Kirito and Asuna as they face the challenges of navigating the treacherous fourth and fifth floors of Aincrad. The movie introduces new conflicts, including faction tensions among players, which adds a layer of political intrigue and highlights the moral dilemmas of survival in a death game.
Asuna remains the emotional core of the story, showcasing her growth from an inexperienced player to a capable and confident warrior. Her bond with Kirito deepens further, offering touching moments that reinforce their partnership. The film also brings humor and camaraderie through supporting characters, providing brief yet impactful relief amidst the tense atmosphere.
Visually, Scherzo of Deep Night is stunning. A-1 Pictures excels with breathtaking animation, from the dynamic fight choreography to the richly detailed environments of Aincrad. The climactic battle sequences are a highlight, blending fluid action with emotional stakes. Yuki Kajiura’s soundtrack amplifies the film’s mood, seamlessly complementing the story’s highs and lows.
However, the movie does have its shortcomings. Its brisk pace occasionally leaves little room for deeper exploration of certain characters and storylines, which could have enriched the narrative. Newcomers unfamiliar with the Progressive series or SAO may also find it challenging to fully appreciate the stakes and character dynamics.
Rating: 8/10
Scherzo of Deep Night is a visually dazzling and emotionally engaging installment in the SAO Progressive saga. While its pacing may feel rushed at times, it delivers an exciting and heartfelt experience that fans of the series are sure to cherish.
