Movie Overview | MoonStruck (1987)
No sooner does Italian-American widow Loretta (Cher) accept a marriage proposal from her doltish boyfriend, Johnny (Danny Aiello), than she finds herself falling for his younger brother, Ronny (Nicolas Cage). She tries to resist, but Ronny lost his hand in an accident he blames on his brother, and has no scruples about aggressively pursuing her while Johnny is out of the country. As Loretta falls deeper in love, she comes to learn that she's not the only one in her family with a secret romance.

This is probably my favorite movie of all times. Just listening to the opening song, "That's Amore", sung by Dean Martin, sets the tone. Cher, who is perfect as the lead character, Loretta Casstorini, growing up in an old-fashioned Italian household in Brooklyn in the 80's, , a young widow who has given up on love and has become engaged to Johnny Cammareri, played by Danny Aiello, who then goes to see his mother in Sicily who is dying, but miraculously survives. One laugh after another, and true depiction of what does go on in Italian families of that time. Cher falls passionately in love with Johnny's brother, Ronny, who bears a grudge, as his brother distracted him and caused him to lose his hand, and the story goes on and on, funny, sad, and just wonderful. All the actors are excellent, Cher, gets a changeover and looks gorgeous when she meets Ronny at the opera. Cher's parents, Cosmo and Rose, played perfectly by Vincent Gardenia and Olympia Dukakis, and even grandpa, who lives upstairs with his dogs, as a personality of his own as he looks at the moon laughing, encouraging his dogs to howl and shouting "La luna...la bella luna". Each and every one of the characters are perfectly picked and make the movie the amazing, delightful movie that it is. Never gets old, and I have seen it over a dozen times.
Wonderful, enduring and perfect

This might be my all time favorite. And I have probably seen it dozens of times. if it happens to be playing on TCM I can not pass it by without stopping for a while and waiting for my favorite scene..or my other favorite scene..and on and on.. It is perfectly cast. It is funny and heartbreaking and romantic and magical. Cher is beautiful. Nicholas Cage is perfectly rough hewn. Every single actor does a fabulous job. You get lost in their world and you don’t want to leave.

Perfect movie
Nicholas Cage and Cher give spot on performances and are complimented by the rest of the cast
The story is funny and warm and captures so much about Italian families that rings true.
It’s a feel good story and I have watched it so many times- it never feels dated .
