Storyline

Synopsis
After a heroic job of successfully landing his storm-damaged aircraft in a war zone, a fearless pilot finds himself between the agendas of multiple militias planning to take the plane and its passengers hostage.

Plot

Former RAF pilot Brodie Torrance pilots Trailblazer Airlines Flight 119 from Singapore to Honolulu via Tokyo, carrying 14 passengers and 3 cabin crew members. The travelers are headed to Canada and include RCMP/GRC officer Louis Gaspare, a suspect in a murder investigation that is still active.
But the plane's avionics are destroyed by a lightning strike, which results in turbulence and an emergency landing on Jolo Island in the Philippines. David Scarsdale, the airline's crisis manager, sends a private military force to New York City to save the passengers. The last rebels are subdued by Brodie and Louis, who also make them divulge their hiding place. After killing the guards, they smuggle the crew and passengers into a bus.

Junmar's soldiers suffer significant losses as the rescue party approaches. The airline doesn't have enough backup funds to bargain their way out, so they can't send in an official crew to remove them from the island for another twenty-four hours. Together with Samuel Dele, his copilot, Brodie successfully starts the aircraft and gets everyone onboard for departure. Louis defeats Junmar's soldiers while Scarsdale's squad positions a Barrett M82 anti-materiel rifle for more firepower.
Despite his wounds, Brodie manages to accelerate the aircraft to its maximum speed, enabling it to lift off safely and strike Junmar with its wheels, killing him. Despite having little fuel and too much damage, Brodie is still able to land the aircraft on the nearby, friendly island of Siasi.

This gripping action-thriller, simply titled "Plane," kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Starring the ever-reliable Gerald Butler in the lead role, the film delivers a white-knuckle ride filled with constant tension and adrenaline-pumping set pieces.

Butler portrays Brodie Torrance, a commercial airline pilot forced to make an emergency landing on a remote island after his plane is struck by lightning. However, the real danger begins when Torrance and his surviving passengers find themselves stranded in a lawless territory, with a dangerous prisoner (Mike Colter) in their midst.

The movie masterfully ratchets up the tension, leaving the viewer constantly wondering if someone will be shot or if any of the passengers will meet a tragic end. This sense of fear and uncertainty never dissipates, even as Torrance and the group make their way to a small, seemingly safe airport.

Butler's performance is, as expected, a highlight of the film. He brings his signature blend of rugged charisma and believable heroism to the role of Torrance, a man forced to rise to the occasion and protect his vulnerable charges.

While the movie does leave the fate of the prisoner somewhat ambiguous after his money is taken away, this minor quibble doesn't detract from the overall thrilling experience. "Plane" is a must-see for fans of high-stakes action movies and Gerald Butler's brand of tough, no-nonsense leading men.

In conclusion, I strongly urge you to watch this gripping, edge-of-your-seat action-thriller. "Plane" delivers a relentless barrage of tension and excitement that will keep you hooked until the very end.

Plane (2023) is an adrenaline-charged action film that blends survival drama and hostage rescue into a tense and fast-paced package. Directed by Jean-François Richet, the movie takes audiences on a wild ride that keeps you gripping the edge of your seat.

The story follows Captain Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler), a seasoned airline pilot whose routine flight takes a disastrous turn when a lightning strike forces an emergency landing on a war-torn island in the Philippines. With no immediate rescue in sight and his passengers held hostage by violent militia forces, Brodie teams up with Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter), a fugitive being extradited on the flight. Together, they navigate a volatile landscape, fighting for survival and redemption.

Gerard Butler is in his element as Brodie, delivering a grounded and relatable performance that balances stoic heroism with moments of vulnerability. Mike Colter’s portrayal of Gaspare is equally compelling, exuding a quiet intensity that adds depth to his morally ambiguous character. The chemistry between the two leads elevates the film, creating a dynamic partnership that drives much of the tension and action.

The film’s pacing is relentless, with high-stakes action sequences that are both gritty and engaging. From the harrowing crash landing to the explosive final showdown, Plane excels at maintaining suspense without becoming over-the-top. The cinematography effectively captures the chaos and danger of the island setting, while the score amplifies the tension.

While Plane delivers on thrills, its plot is fairly straightforward and leans heavily on genre tropes. The supporting characters, including the passengers, are underdeveloped, and the villains are somewhat one-dimensional. However, the film’s focus on its leads and the relentless action more than compensates for these shortcomings.

Rating: 7/10
Plane is a solid action thriller that knows exactly what it wants to be: a gripping survival story with pulse-pounding sequences and charismatic leads. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s an entertaining ride that will leave action fans satisfied.

Plane is a 2023 action thriller movie starring Gerard Butler, Tony Goldwyn, Mike Colter, and Paul Ben-Victor. The story starts innocuously enough with commercial Trailblazer Airlines Flight 119 flying from Singapore to Honolulu via Tokyo. Of course, the weather is bad and of course the greedy bosses at the airlines insist the pilot (Butler) fly above the storm to make their destination in time.

The plane suffers damage during the storm over the South China Sea, but pilot Brodie Torrance (Butler) ably assisted by his co-pilot Samuel Dele (Yoson An) makes an incredible landing on a seemingly uninhabited island with the loss of only two lives; an air hostess and the RCMP officer who is escorting fugitive Louis Gaspare (Colter) back to face justice. Of course, this is no ordinary island. It is home to a villainous gang that kidnaps foreigners, holds them to ransom to make their origin countries pay, and if not, they are executed. Could it get any worse? Yes! Prepare to perch on the edge of your seat and shovel that popcorn down in handfuls. This is not your usual air crash disaster movie.

I love disaster movies, especially airplane disasters, and I am a big Gerard Butler fan. After all, he has saved the American president thrice from terrorists (Olympus/London/Angel Has Fallen), has steered a nuclear submarine safely through heavily mined Russian waters (Hunter Killer) and saved the world from ecological disaster (Geostorm). When the end of the world comes, I want him on my team. Butler plays Torrance as not quite the anti-hero, but an ordinary man doing everything noble because, as the captain, he is responsible for the lives in his care. He is fighting for the survival of everyone on the plane, including himself. He does this without being schmaltzy or corny. Tony Goldwyn is excellent, as always, as Scarsdale, a former Special Forces officer who swoops in to run point at the airline’s headquarters. Louis Gaspare and Torrance team up to push the rescue mission while waiting for possible help to arrive. It’s a good team and you’ll be rooting for Gaspare to either escape or be vindicated. Surprise factor on that point!

This is an exceptionally good action movie with no soppiness and no long staring into the distance moments. The actual crash and dramatic events come thick and fast and although some elements are a bit far-fetched (the co-pilot manages to revive the electronics), well… who is going to point this it as not being credible. Not me. I’m no pilot. This is a happy ending with everyone, characters and viewers, being scared witless. The one sobering element is that much of the background story is true. Rebels and separatists do kidnap people for ransom; many are executed, and the Philippine government is probably too scared to send in troops without massive international backup. Pretty young women like a few of the characters on the plane would most likely be sold off to the highest bidder, never to be seen again. The suspense is incredible and isn’t that what an action thriller movie aims to achieve? Watch it. You won’t be disappointed. Don’t forget the popcorn. You’re going to need it. PS: Dame Joan Collins absolutely loved it!
