Awakenings is a wonderful film for so many reasons. It is profoundly moving, intelligent and brilliantly performed, with a lot to recommend. It is exquisitely filmed, with wonderful cinematography and scenery, and the music is beautiful.
The direction is rock-solid, the story is moving and compassionate and the screenplay is very intelligent and thought-provoking. Then there are the performances, both Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro give outstanding performances, and John Heard and Julie Kavner are equally impressive.
Overall, if you like this sort of film, by all means see Awakenings, because I think you will like it. Equally if you love good acting and movies that make you think, Awakenings is also ideal.

Awakenings is a profoundly moving film that explores the delicate interplay between hope and despair through the lens of medical miracles and human connection. Directed by Penny Marshall and based on Oliver Sacks’ memoir, the film stars Robin Williams as Dr. Malcolm Sayer and Robert De Niro as Leonard Lowe, a patient who has been in a catatonic state for decades due to encephalitis lethargica.

Williams delivers a heartfelt performance as the compassionate and determined doctor who seeks to revive the consciousness of his patients. His portrayal strikes a balance between professionalism and empathy, capturing the essence of a man driven by the desire to help those who have been marginalized by society. De Niro, in a transformative role, embodies Leonard’s journey from a life of silence to one filled with discovery and joy. His portrayal of a man rediscovering life is both poignant and powerful, showcasing the depth of his talent.

The film excels in its exploration of the human experience, highlighting themes of love, loss, and the fragility of life. The relationships that develop between Dr. Sayer and his patients, particularly with Leonard, serve as the emotional core of the story. As Leonard awakens to the world, viewers are treated to a beautiful exploration of the small joys of life, the challenges of re-adjusting, and the impact of genuine human connection.

Visually, Awakenings is straightforward yet effective, with cinematography that emphasizes the emotional weight of its subjects. The pacing allows for moments of levity amid the serious themes, ensuring that the film never feels overwhelmingly heavy.

The score, composed by Randy Newman, adds an extra layer of emotional resonance, guiding the audience through the highs and lows of the narrative. Newman’s melodies complement the film’s tone beautifully, enhancing the poignant moments without overwhelming them.

In summary, Awakenings is a touching and thought-provoking film that highlights the resilience of the human spirit. It’s a testament to the power of hope, the importance of connection, and the impact that one individual can have on another’s life. With stellar performances and a deeply moving story, it remains a classic that resonates with anyone who has ever faced the challenges of life and the longing for connection. This film is a must-see for those who appreciate heartfelt storytelling and the complexities of the human condition.
