Storyline

In 1978 Azusa, California, Rocky Dennis, a boy with craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, is accepted without question by his freewheeling biker mother’s boyfriend, his “extended motorcycle family,” and his maternal grandparents who love baseball cards, but others misunderstand him and treat him with fear, pity, awkwardness, and teasing. Despite her wild habits as a Turks motorcycle gang member and her poor connection with her father, Rocky’s mother, Florence “Rusty” Dennis, wants to provide him a regular existence.

She battles a principal who wants to label Rocky intellectually impaired and send him to a special education school, even though his illness has not harmed his IQ. Rocky reports feeling well during his semi-annual checkup despite headaches his mother can relieve by singing. Rusty laughs when a young doctor informs him Rocky’s life expectancy is six months, saying many previous physicians have made baseless statements regarding Rocky’s health.

At the film’s conclusion, Rocky’s biker family—Rusty, Gar, and Dozer—leaves flowers and 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers baseball cards at his grave as Rocky recites his English class poetry.

This movie is based on the true story of  a boy, Roy "Rocky" Dennis, with a rare genetical disorder that is disfiguring and causes cranial enlargements.  Played amazingly by Eric Stoltz, not only is his life not normal due to his disorder and disfigurement, but he does not have a normal mother.  His mother, Rusty Dennis, played by Cher,  was totally supportive of Rocky but was also part of a motorcycle gang and was addicted to drugs.  Her boyfriend Gar, played by Sam Elliot, was also supportive of him and was like a father figure to him.  Rocky has to deal with ridicule for his appearance due to his facial deformity, but he feels the love of his mother, her boyfriend and the motorcycle gang who are his support.  Rocky even finds love when he works in a camp for the blind and meets a young girl.  Although he outlived his life expectancy, one morning Rusty finds her son dead.  This is devastating to her, as she never accepted the doctor's prognosis.  This is a heartwarming true story played by amazing actors.  The make-up to disfigure Rocky was so amazing that it won an Academy Award for best makeup.  A movie that is sad but uplifting at the same time.  Wonderful!

A very moving story beautifully acted.
Eric Stoltz is perfectly cast and despite the significant makeup his warmth and intelligence shine through.
Cher gives a perfect performance as his mother and her acting is understated and effective.
I did not expect to be so drawn in to the characters and so affected by the story.

Peter Bogdanovich’s Mask (1985) is a profoundly moving film that strikes a rare balance between heartfelt drama and uplifting resilience. Based on a true story, the film chronicles the life of Rocky Dennis, a teenager with a severe facial deformity, and his struggles to navigate a world that often judges by appearances.

Eric Stoltz delivers a deeply empathetic performance as Rocky Dennis, embodying both the physical and emotional nuances of a character whose spirit shines through despite his challenges. Stoltz’s portrayal is complemented by Cher’s remarkable turn as Rocky’s mother, Rusty, who offers a gritty yet tender depiction of maternal love and determination. Their chemistry creates a compelling emotional core that drives the film’s narrative.

The film’s strength lies in its ability to address heavy themes such as disability, societal judgment, and personal triumph with both sensitivity and authenticity. It avoids becoming overly sentimental, thanks in part to the sharp, honest screenplay and Bogdanovich’s deft direction. The story does not shy away from the harsh realities Rocky and his family face, but it also celebrates their victories, both big and small.

Mask is visually poignant, using its period setting and vibrant character moments to enrich the narrative. The film’s soundtrack, featuring a blend of classic rock and poignant ballads, further enhances the emotional resonance of Rocky’s journey.

While the film does tackle some well-trodden themes, it distinguishes itself through its genuine depiction of Rocky’s unique spirit and his impact on those around him. Mask remains a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of love and acceptance. It’s a film that resonates long after the credits roll, leaving viewers with a renewed appreciation for resilience and the beauty of human connection.
