Movie Title: The Comeback Trail (2020)
Tagline:
Hollywood Has Never Pulled A Stunt Like This!

Storyline

Synopsis:
Two movie producers who owe money to the mob set up their aging movie star for an insurance scam to try and save themselves. But they wind up getting more than they ever imagined.

Plot:
Producer Max Barber is in substantial debt to mobster Reggie Fontaine following the failure of his most recent film at the box office. James Moore, a rival producer, offers to mitigate his debt by offering $1 million for a script for a film entitled "Paradise," which Max holds the rights to. Max reluctantly consents, but his decision is reversed when he accidentally observes the death of movie icon Frank Pierce. Subsequently, Moore receives $5 million in insurance proceeds.

Max realizes that he can pay off his debt and complete Paradise. Consequently, he resolves to produce a new film solely to take off his lead and collect the money. Max and his nephew Walter Creason persuade the despondent Western protagonist Duke Montana to become the protagonist of their forthcoming project after they encounter him in a convalescent home. Nevertheless, Max's initial strategy of igniting Duke on the first day of filming is unsuccessful.

Max's subsequent attempts to end Duke's life by collapsing a bridge and having him assaulted by a bull also fail. Max recognizes that they are truly filming a quality film after viewing unedited footage; however, his most recent plan to assassinate Duke renders him unconscious. Walter reprimands him upon his awakening, with the realization that he has been attempting to murder Duke throughout the entire time. When Max discloses that he has not utilized his own funds but has borrowed an additional $1 million from Reggie, they both come to the realization that they must prevent him from murdering Duke himself.

Reggie and his goons promptly appear during a shooting scenario and attempt to murder Duke. Max appeals with Reggie, who ultimately agrees to allow them to complete the film after Walter presents them with the unedited footage. Duke, however, discovers the truth and momentarily reverts to suicidal behavior; he nevertheless completes the film, which is released to great acclaim.

At the same time as it is witty and amusing, this satirical take on Hollywood is a great example. People that are a member of The Comeback Trail are able to make statements that are insightful, the ability to deliver witty quips at the appropriate moments, and the ability to do spectacular activities.

The work that Robert De Niro has done in the entertainment industry makes him an excellent illustration of a sleazy Hollywood producer. The part of the fading celebrity who is compelled to film the movie is played by Tommy Lee Jones, who not only adds his signature icy charm to the job, but also gives a surprising degree of sympathy to the role. Due to the fact that he has all of these attributes, he is an outstanding candidate for the post. Morgan Freeman is amazing in his role as a friendly but dangerous gangster who is incredibly excited about movies, and Zach Braff is funny in his role as Robert De Niro's dumb but charming nephew who ends up becoming his sidekick. Both of these actors portray characters that are tremendously enthusiastic about movies. These two performers are just outstanding in the parts that they have been cast in. They have a tremendous range of people, everyone of them have their own unique qualities and is entertaining to watch all the time. This holds true in every single instance. If you are considering watching it, it is strongly suggested that you put your mind to it.

The Comeback Trail is a lighthearted crime-comedy that plays like a love letter to old-school Hollywood, blending slapstick humor with a wry commentary on the filmmaking industry. Directed by George Gallo, the film boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Zach Braff, who collectively elevate the quirky script.

The plot centers on Max Barber (De Niro), a washed-up movie producer drowning in debt to a menacing mob boss (Morgan Freeman). Desperate for cash, Max devises a hilariously outrageous scheme: to stage a fake movie production and “accidentally” kill its washed-up star, Duke Montana (Tommy Lee Jones), to collect the insurance money. Predictably, chaos ensues as the resilient Duke survives one outlandish stunt after another, all while unwittingly reviving his career.

De Niro shines in his element as the sleazy yet endearing Max, delivering comedic timing reminiscent of his performances in Midnight Run and Meet the Parents. Tommy Lee Jones provides a surprisingly heartfelt portrayal of Duke, balancing deadpan humor with a touch of melancholy. Zach Braff adds charm and energy as Max’s hapless partner, while Freeman’s deadpan menace as the mobster underscores the stakes without overshadowing the humor.

The film thrives on its playful tone and the chemistry between its leads, but its reliance on predictable gags and familiar tropes sometimes feels like a missed opportunity for more inventive storytelling. The pacing occasionally lags, and some jokes don’t land as well as they should. Still, its nostalgic homage to Hollywood’s golden age and the movie-within-a-movie antics make it an enjoyable ride.

Rating: 6.5/10
The Comeback Trail is a breezy, feel-good comedy that doesn’t reinvent the wheel but offers enough charm and laughs to entertain, thanks largely to its legendary cast. It’s a fun watch for fans of old-school Hollywood satire and screwball hijinks.

Movie producer Max Barber (Robert de Niro) and his naïve but starstruck nephew and partner Walter are in dire straits with yet another movie (Killer Nuns?) bombing at the box office. Trouble is, they owe a lot of money to a mobster called Reggie Fontaine (played by Morgan Freeman). Reggie wants his money. Now. While on another set, Max sees a terrible accident in which the leading man is killed by falling off a building during a shoot. No worries, he’s insured. Slowly but surely the seeds of a plot unfold as Max convinces ageing has-been spaghetti Western star Duke Montana (Tommy Lee Jones) to pick up his cowboy hat and star in a new movie. Duke, who was contemplating suicide, having nothing left to live for at an old age facility, agrees. The trouble is, Duke seems to be unkillable. And Reggie wants his money. Now!

The Comeback Trail is a remake of the 1982 film so is set in the era with the same movie making techniques, the same dinosaur attitudes to women – the director is a female – and the same old Western cliches which are evergreen and appealing. Don’t expect an Oscar-worthy film here but do expect a lot of laughs, some nostalgia for how it was way back then, and actually a kind of admiration for how they shot movies and somehow managed to pull together some very watchable stuff. Freeman, De Niro, and Jones have some memorable comic moments and there are screamingly funny scenes which they play deadpan, and heaven knows how they do it. Make popcorn, sit back, and have a very good laugh. I know I shouldn’t but I’m rating this 5 stars for sheer chutzpah!
